Zen Blues & Visual Ponderings: Cyanotype Mixed Media Works
Inspired by Nature
by Colleen Steenhagen
Colleen's current collection of mixed media art is mostly built upon cyanotypes created from found materials and negatives. With a long history of photography, Colleen has been drawn to the cyanotype process of developing images with the use of the sun in her own back yard, in place of a darkroom within the confines of a building. As a mixed media artist, she starts with cyanotypes as the initial layer in a multi- stepped experience of discovery. Each piece develops on its own as she intuitively combines imagery, pencil, pastels, paint, fabric, stitch and wax, etc.
Bit by bit Colleen crops, rotates, outlines, adds color or texture, etc. to build up a piece. In the beginning she has no defined vision or idea in mind for the final image, but in the end the pieces come to life with a visual story open to interpretation by the viewer -- eliciting both knowledge and mystery.
On View through October 9.
