KALEIDOSCOPIC CANDY-COLORED IMAGERY
Paul’s work explores how nature and power rhyme. It is a study of candy-colored sensual puzzles displayed on high gloss aluminum or plexiglas and metallic paper. The viewer is drawn in to feel comforted yet disturbed, pulled towards sensuality, but paused at the detachment. All are invited in to play and explore and wonder if this kaleidoscopic fractal imagery is a mirror, science fiction, an other-worldly situation, or a nightly dream.
PROCESS
Paul’s work is digital…he uses Flame and Amber software, fractal software for patterns, painting software for digital airbrush & air erasure, and digital photography to show you his world. The mandalas are built up using transparent layers. Sometimes after they are compressed, Paul wraps them around figures and builds up additional transparent layers. The figure skin is his canvas and the viewer asks if they’re photographs of tattoos, painted figures, or something else. Some of the work is printed on high gloss aluminum and some is printed on metallic film and bonded to the reverse side of clear plexiglas.
BIO
Paul has a BFA in painting from the University of Illinois. He has been extensively showing his award-winning work as a solo artist and in group invitational as well as regional, national & international juried exhibitions for photography and figurative works since the 1980’s. He has also worked as a lecturer/instructor at the college level.
His work is in several permanent collections including Millikin University (Decatur IL), Container Corporation of America Borg Warner (Chicago), Illinois State Museum (Springfield IL), Butler Institute of American Art (Youngstown OH), Digital Equipment Corporation (Maynard MA), and Hope College (Holland MI).
